AmericanSingles packs it all onto the front page. See matches, summary of activity both by you and by interested members, and your profile. How do they get so much on the home page? It’s all in the icons. Once you learn their meaning, you can navigate easily. AmericanSingles is a solid site for online dating, but does not have the membership of some of the higher ranked sites.

Dating Pool Potential:

Spark Networks owns both AmericanSingles and JDate and both sites are formatted in a similar way. However, site statistics are different: there are fewer members online at any given time on AmericanSingles, indicating a smaller dating pool since this is a general site as opposed to a niche site. According to Quantcast, an open internet ratings service, AmericanSingles’ visitors are more likely to be male, 56 males to 44 females, 45% earn over $60,000 annually, and 73% are over the age of 35 as opposed to JDate’s younger, more affluent visitors. Once you’ve posted your profile, you can easily track responses to your profile, instant message, send and receive e-cards and see “flirts” to get a better sense of the dating pool. But you’ll have to pay the membership fee to read, write and respond to email.

Profiles:

Like the other Spark Networks’ sites, completing your profile on AmericanSingles is a quick and simple process. The profile includes physical features, lifestyle preferences, relationship type preference, and some open essay questions where you can express yourself. Add a photo and within 24 hours your complete profile will be posted. AmericanSingles says your profile will appear more frequently in member matches when you post more photographs.

Matching/Searching:

You'll find a perfect correlation between profile and search criteria. Be as broad or as specific as you like as you look for that next great date. Save time with a quick search or customize your search in every detail. View your results as a photo gallery or in a list. Sort the results by newest, most active, closest to you or most popular. Like most other online dating sites, AmericanSingles will send you regular emails with matches for you based on your profile, and you can see these matches on AmericanSingles by selecting Your Matches under the search tab.

Communication & Additional Services:

AmericanSingles offers five ways to communicate: Instant Message, Chat, Email, Message Boards and E-cards. You may also use the “Think you’d click?” function to use AmericanSingles as the go-between to find out if another member share your interest. These are the yes, maybe, and no buttons found on each profile. If there is mutual interest, it will be indicated on any of your results lists like the Members Who’ve Viewed You. This list will show you a photo and some basic information on each member who has viewed your profile. Note AmericanSingles’ informative icons:

Monitor: Viewed you.
Heart Card: Sent a flirt.
Envelope: Emailed you.
Card with an E: Sent an e-card.
Flames: Added you to personal hotlist.

One face indicates the above activity, a second face appears when you have reciprocated.

Navigation is easy on AmericanSingles, a site that uses simple tabs, drop down menus and icons. The summary list on your home page lets you see your progress quickly and easily.

The site includes helpful tips like, “Get creative by making custom lists that suit you and help you stay organized. Lists can include categories like: "have potential," "within a 50 mile radius," "great but long distance," "like the same music," "can’t wait to meet," "currently dating," or "just my style." You’ll also find a FAQs page and can contact AmericanSingles by email.

Summary:

Icons are key to unlocking AmericanSingles, a shorthand for keeping track of who’s interested in you and who you are interested in. Integration is seamless between profiles, search and match functions. AmericanSingles is a well-designed site with a variety of communication options.
